The Audition Process

Bancroft Musical Theatre

Audition Process

1) Open Audition: For principal roles ***(audition for chorus members not required)

At open auditions we ask that students, wishing to try out for a major role, come prepared to open auditions.  At auditions everyone will learn the same song from the show we producing.  The song that you learn will become your audition piece.

If  a student does not  come with a prepared song, but wishes to try out for a major role, they are asked to sing “Happy Birthday.” “Happy Birthday” is used because 1) It is a song that most everyone knows and 2) it is a song in which we can easily test the range of the singer.  It is a common practice in many children’s theatre companies.

2) Call Back Auditions: For students being considered for principal roles. All those on the call back list are allowed to audition for a second time.

At call backs actors are asked to read cold from the script and sing a song from the show after a short practice.

Students who do not get called back are automatically a part of the chorus.  No student is dropped from the show and may also try out for the dance ensemble.

3) Dance Auditions: For students who want to try out for the dance ensemble.

Anyone can audition to be a dancer.  Part of a dance will be taught at the beginning of the audition.  After a short practice the groups will be asked to perform what was taught to them in front of the choreographer and directors.  The performance will be judged not on how well they execute this first attempt , but on their ability to move with rhythm

What the directors and choreographers look for:

  • Students who sing on pitch
  • Students who move well
  • Students who are able to show a lot of expression in song, dialogue and movement
  • Students who exhibit poise

Remember all students are stars:  A musical production has its backbone in the joint efforts of principal actors and chorus.  It takes a team to produce an outstanding show.

***Students wishing to be a chorus member report to the first day of auditions and sign up and turn in audition forms.  Once all paperwork is complete the student is free to leave.  No further audition is necessary. No students are turned away. Students will be notified when rehearsals begin.

****Students wishing to particpate in stage crew must also sign up on the day of auditions.  Once all paperwork is complete students are free to leave. Students  will be called to rehearsals closer to the time of production.
